In the World War 2nd, the Allies made indiscriminately numerous air raids to the German capital Berlin and the dead bodies of the deceased Berliners were gathered in the gymnasium.

第2世界大戦において、1943年11月18日から1944年3月24日まで連合国がドイツの首都ベルリンに対して16回もの空襲をした。第1回目のベルリ爆撃だけの空襲で143人が死亡、4人が行方不明、409人が負傷して、8,493軒が全半壊（内全壊は533軒）した。都市に対する無差別爆撃を開始され、ベルリンを焦がす悲惨な空襲が本格化して、昼夜を問わずに大量の爆弾がベルリンに投下されれた。埋葬のために、空襲で亡くなった多数のベルリン市民の死体が埋葬のため体育館に集めら散在した。
