During the American Civil War, at Spotsylvannia of a fierce battleground in May of 1864, the South Army accumulated in a long moat to bury their corpses on the battlefield.

In the American Civil War, the civil war broke out during the four years from 1861 to 1865. Approximately 620,000 people who died in the World War II exceeding about 400,000 war deads were killed. In the south of the capital Washington D.C., Virginia State belonging to the Southern Union became the main battleground of about 60%. In Spotsylvania that was in the main battlefield, it became a fierce battleground in May of 1864. For the surviving soldiers, the ally of the enemy's victims were left out so that they could not be seen and the enemy's victims were visible. The dead bodies of most of the Northern Army 's war dead were accumulated in a long moat and buried. It gradually became impossible to leave a danger to recover the corpse, it was left unattended and became a white bone. The brutal war became only for survivors, and the dead were buried with death.

アメリカの南北戦争は、1861年から1865年の4年間の内戦が勃発した。第二次世界大戦での約40万人の戦死者を超える約62万人が戦死した。首都ワシントンD.C.の南方で南部連合に属したヴァージニア州内が約6割の主戦場となった。その主戦場内であったスポットシルヴェニアでは1864年5月に激戦地となった。生き残った兵士のために、味方の戦死者は見えないようにして、敵の犠牲者は見えるように放置した。南軍のほとんどの戦死者の死体を、長い堀に集積して埋葬した。次第に余裕がなくなり、遺体を回収するのに危険をおかす事は回避されて、放置されて白骨化した。残忍な戦争は生存者だけのものになり、死者は死をもって葬られた。
